Repeat After Me: Words Mean Things

June 6, 2010

Number of times I overheard the phrase “No means yes” being used by apparently frustrated men in a bar last night: 7

Seven!  Seven times!  By 5 different men.  (Two of the times were repeats by dudes who seemed to need to reiterate the importance of this information to their friends.)

Listen up, guys.  Words?  They mean things.  I realize you have the power of patriarchy behind you and all, but that does NOT mean that you get to change the meanings of words just to suit your fancy.  If a girl turns you down, she has a reason.  She might change her mind, might say “yes” later when before she had said “no.”  But that does NOT change the meaning of the original “no!”  “No” still means “no.” And “yes” is the only thing that means “yes.”

How often are we going to have to cover this?

I know, right? You’d think they’d at least come up with a different way to say it.

Also, ashamedly, some of these guys were people who were with my group. I kind of earned my bitch badge with one of them, but whatever. He deserved it.
