Unremarked Atrocities

April 7, 2010

In the wake of the leaked video that shows how truly terrible the conduct of the U.S.’ wars in Iraq has been and continues to be in its disregard for the value of innocent civilian lives, there comes a stark (and graphic) reminder of how much the war in Afghanistan is not about liberating Afghan women, despite self-congratulatory statements to the contrary.

My least favorite part of this is how little anyone in the mainstream American media (or Congress, for that matter) seems to care about reporting or investigating the fact that Americans were allegedly involved in digging the bullets out of women’s bodies with knives in order to cover up their involvement in their deaths.  Some lives, it seems, matter more than others.

Add to this all of the rhetoric we heard pre-war about the freeing of Muslim women and the American concern for women’s rights in the Middle East (Laura Bush, I’m looking at YOU), and what you also have is proof that some lives matter only when they can be used as tools of their own oppression.
