Lady Sings the Blues: Precious Bryant
Here it is, the last day of Women’s History Month, and we’re finally getting around to participating. This is a portrait (by our own Lex) of Precious Bryant, a fantastic blues/folk singer and guitarist. Ms. Bryant is still around and producing great music, so this is a sort of contemporary history post–but what’s both amazing and historical about her is that though she learned to play guitar when she was 9, in 1951, she didn’t release an album on a label until 2002. Dedication, friends. In the almost 50 years in between, Ms. Bryant played at blues and folk festivals throughout the South and around the world, and by all accounts, was generally awesome.
Below is a video of her performing live, which is great (especially if you appreciate blues guitar). Thanks to Lex for introducing us to her, and kudos to Precious Bryant for bringing the greatness, year after year.
